Congressman Geoff Davis Appointed to House Ways and Means Committee
The House Republican Steering Committee appointed Congressman Geoff Davis to serve on the House Committee on Ways and Means, one of the oldest standing committees.
“We congratulate Congressman Davis and wish him well in his new appointment,” said Steve Stevens, president, Northern Kentucky Chamber. “The Ways and Means Committee appointment means Congressman Davis will consider many pieces of legislation that will have the potential to significantly affect our businesses and communities.”
The House Committee on Ways and Means is one of the oldest standing committees in the House. The Constitution requires every tax bill to originate in the House of Representatives; with jurisdiction over revenue-raising measures, the Ways and Means Committee is responsible for initiating all tax legislation. In addition to taxes, the Committee has authority over trade, Social Security, health care, Medicare, Medicaid and social welfare issues.
“The Ways and Means Committee will play a central role in resolving the major issues facing Kentucky and the nation. I look forward to working hard with all my colleagues—both Democrat and Republican—to help guide our economy and our nation toward a more prosperous future,” Congressman Davis stated.
Davis is also the second ranking Republican on the Trade Subcommittee and the fifth ranking Republican on the Select Revenue subcommittee. The Subcommittee on Trade has jurisdiction over issues related to export policy and promotion, customs and customs administration, import trade and policy, commodity agreements and reciprocal trade agreements, and budget authorizations for the customs revenue functions of the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. International Trade Commission,
and the U.S. Trade Representative. The Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures has jurisdiction over revenue (tax) measures referred by the Chair of the Ways and Means Committee.
